Where do I start? That’s a question my clients and friends ask me about their home remodeling projects. And I feel the same way about this blog. I’m overwhelmed, and I don’t see an obvious starting place. I’m sure professional bloggers would tell me to just start. I’ve thought about this project for years, and, as the saying goes…..time waits for no one. It’s time to start. Sooooo, here goes!
I’ve owned my own (well, with my husband, Eric) decorative painting business for over 20 years. And since 2008, we (Eric and I) have almost exclusively refinished cabinets. Can we say….Goodbye Golden Oak! We’ve now personally refinished cabinets in over 250 homes.
I’m not the type of “painter” who comes into your home and says…..”Just tell me what color ya want.” You see, it’s sooooo much more than that. I’m a “big picture” kind of girl, and I want you to LOVE your project when you’re finished.
Most of the kitchens we work in haven’t been updated for 15 years or more. And refinishing the cabinets is just one little part of the whole project. Besides refinishing cabinets, our clients are re-doing the floors, getting new counter tops and backsplashes. And these choices usually lead to new wall colors. See what I mean about to be able to see the “big picture”? All these elements need to ‘play nice together’ (You’ll hear this phrase from me a lot.). This blog is about helping you see how to put your home together so you’ll love it.
I want you to get ideas here for DIY projects in your own home. Eric and I have remodeled three homes and built one ourselves. And I DO mean building it ourselves! We did EVERYTHING except dig and pour the basement, lay the septic system and install the carpet. And WE LIVED IN THEM while we remodeled and built them. Including the new build! We have hands-on knowledge and experience about surviving any DIY project you might want to do. We’re also smart enough to know when we should NOT do a project on our own, but to hire it done.
You’ll get to meet and know Eric here too. Trust me, you’ll want to learn from him.
I hope to share with you not only How-To’s but the thought processes behind the projects we do. I’ll teach you how to survive a kitchen remodel. We do love to eat real food that tastes good, and I’ve learned how to cook and eat well while doing a full kitchen rebuild.
And if owning our own business isn’t enough, we have a “fuller nest” with our daughter and her 4 kiddos living here too. You just might get a glimpse or two of them. I’ll be sharing some projects and recipes that have been “kid tested”.
And I WANT to hear from you! You can comment on the blog and also send me pictures and questions of things you want to learn. My email is firstname.lastname@example.org. I’m also on facebook (Brenda Deeter, look for the public figure page) and I’d love to see you join me there.
I hope you will join me with Life with My Fixer Upper!
